Dr. Mary Alice Silverman has devoted her private practice primarily to the treatment of children and adolescents, with an emphasis on collaboration with parents and schools. Her strong focus on the integration of family and educational settings makes her approach to intervention distinctive, sensible, and effective. Her particular areas of interest include parent consultation, the assessment and treatment of younger children, families coping with major stressors (such as divorce, illness, or death), and anxiety disorders. Her therapy approach is integrative and pragmatic, incorporating play-based, cognitive-behavioral, supportive, and dynamic approaches.
Dr. Silverman received her B.A. in Psychology from Duke University, her M.A. in Child Development from Tufts University, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Catholic University. She did her doctoral internship at The University of Maryland Medical Center, which included year-long rotations at the School Mental Health Program, Center for Young Children, Children's Day Hospital, and the Pediatric Emergency Department.
Dr. Silverman worked for over five years at the Wake Kendall Group before starting her own private practice. In July 2011 Dr. Silverman joined the partnership of the Washington Psychological Center. In August 2023, Dr. Silverman began the next chapter of her career, practicing independently as Mary Alice C. Silverman, Ph.D. PLLC.
